Good Books II More Reading Recommendations for High School Students
Good Books II More Reading Recommendations for High School Students With the success of our last list, weâve added some more recommendations from AJ leaders. As a reminder, here are the ground rules: the only requirements were that the books be appropriate for high-school-aged readers, and that they not be books that regularly show up on high school reading lists. Fiction and nonfiction, memoir and sci-fiâ"itâs all here.Happy reading!Marina by Carlos Ruiz ZafónRecommended by Tala el-FahmawiWe are doomed to remember what never really happened. Marina is a beautiful Gothic tale that perfectly combines horror, mystery and romance. It is a heart wrenching tale that will keep you turning its pages searching for answers. While reading this novel, I found my eyes watering, my heart racing and my mind refusing to sleep. It is a book you will think about long after you finish the last page. A true masterpiece. The Book Thief by Markus ZusakRecommended by Kristin JusiAs a lover of books, this novel made me appreciate, well, books! A fantastic piece of his torical fiction, The Book Thief is a pretty easy read about a young girls experience in Nazi Germany, and in my opinion, beautifully written.Hans Christian Andersen: The Complete Fairy TalesRecommended by Nieka BrightDont let the name deceive you; these tales are brimming with real life lessons. To quote someone wise, If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.âFlight Behavior by Barbara KingsolverRecommended by Stephanie SimonIf you liked The Bean Trees and Animal Kingdom, you should check out this tale from Barbara Kingsolver about our changing world. Not only does it dazzle you with forest ecosystems and the migration patterns of monarch butterflies, it also deftly explores how culture shapes our views about science and the world around us. Through engaging characters and accessible prose, Kingsolver draws us in to explore the tension between scientific and cultural views, challenging u s to think about how we acquire our own deeply-held beliefs.Foundation by Isaac AsimovRecommended by David MasseyScience fiction with great twists!Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom StoppardRecommended by Sebastian von ZerneckHave you ever felt like you were just a minor character in someone elses story? This is the book for you. A re-telling of Shakespeares Hamlet from the perspective of two secondary characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is a quintessential postmodern play: innovative, mind-bending and absolutely hilarious. My Ãntonia by Willa CatherRecommended by Carmel RichardIm currently re-reading this book and falling in love again! What sets Willa Cather apart as an author is her ability to paint a picture almost impressionistically with a few brushstrokes of her pen, as well as her power to transform a web of vignettes into a full-fledged novel through her effortless encapsulation of universal themes within the eccentricities of unadorned characters. In this story, she does more. She binds all the characters together through the magnetism of a single central figure. This the story of Ãntonia Shimerda, an immigrant girl blossoming into a woman against the sparse landscape of 19th century Nebraska. This is the story of life and death, joy and grief, self-discovery, but most of all undying memory. Its Cathers masterpiece, in my opinion. Highly recommend!
Tutor Nerds
Tutor Nerds eNotes: A Literary Companion Many high school students find it difficult to get through the books on their reading list, whether itâs for a standard 9th grade English class or for an AP English class (READ: Ask a Nerd! Taking the AP Exam). There are many options available and some of them are better than others. One option to consider is eNotes. The Great Books List eNotes offers over 40,000 study guides for books on the Great Books list. Although these can be useful for anyone who wants to improve or broaden their literary skills, eNotes primary purpose is to serve the needs of high school students and their teachers. Although the Great Books list will broaden the minds of young literary students, many texts have forms of English that are difficult for the modern reader to comprehend. For example, Macbeth by William Shakespeare and The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne offer fabulous insights and valid moral conflicts but the language is a challenge. Even students who use the plain language version may find it difficult to fully comprehend without an additional study guide (READ: Five Tips for Success in English Class). eNotes offers over 40,000 study guides for books on the Great Books list. Even students who use the plain language version may find it difficult to fully comprehend without an additional study guide. Historical and Contemporary Students who read period pieces such as the Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe or Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte also benefit from ample background information about the time period and the place of certain characters in society, as well as a complex biography of the author. Contemporary texts can also be an exciting challenge and one of the advantages of eNotes is that it also offers current texts including The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and The Giver by Lois Lowry (CLICK: 100 Best Novels). Accuracy Another advantage of using the study guides on eNotes is the assurance of accuracy. Literature students often Google the text theyre studying and may or may not come across a legitimate source. According to eNotes, the study guides are written by teachers, PhD candidates, and literary scholars. User Friendly Lets say I have been assigned to read 1984 by George Orwell. I can simply click on 1984 and the site will pull up a new page with a summary of the novel. Students are advised to read the summary before reading the full text. eNotes also provides an estimated reading time for each novel to help students manage their study time and understand the complexity of the text. Students who are visual learners can look at the overview on a short YouTube video. Students can also look at a 1984 chapter by chapter summary and analysis, which can be helpful as they prepare for finals. eNotes also provides information about the themes of each text, which is especially important for student reading period pieces of which the themes may appear obtuse. As is common for literary study guides, eNotes also provides a list of primary characters and a summary of their personality or purpose in the novel. In addition, secondary and tertiary characters are listed for reference. While looking through the site for 1984, theres also a list of critical essays which can help students understand how literary critics of the world reviewed this particular novel, or any novel on eNotes, however students should never copy and paste such information to use as their own. For 1984, there are also homework help questions. For example, if a student wants to find out what one of the characters thoughts are on âhuman heritage and dyingâ they can do so. Many of the issues that todays high school students have is that a lot of information in period texts asks the reader to âread in between the linesâ. Sometimes this is simply to make the text more interesting and sometimes it was because the author was not allowed to state outright particular opinions or facts due to the political leanings in the country they lived or in the time they lived (READ: Ask a Private Irvine English Tutor: Writing Apps). Read the Entire Text! Its very important for students to understand that if they only use eNotes they will not receive a passing grade in their class. eNotes, although very helpful, is meant to be a companion to the actual book. Students need to read the full text in its original version or plain language version to fully comprehend the information and do well in their classes. Math or Magic
Math or Magic Mathematics, the science of numbers, quantities and shapes, is commonly represented as a set of exact rules, formulas and theorems. Math concepts are often hard to understand but they are always based on strong mathematical proofs and justifications. However, even in the accurate world of digits there is always room for astonishing and mysterious facts. There are some math occurrences that look like a magic. Of course, there are mathematical arguments behind each of these riddles but nothing is more magnetic for a vivid human mind than a hint of mystery. Letâs exercise our brains with some of these mystic math puzzles. There is an interesting observation regarding the letter âAâ, which is one of the most frequently used letters in the English language. However, this letter very rarely occurs in the names of numbers. From number 0 to 1,000, âAâ only appears in 1,000 (one thousand). Isnt that a mystique? Many numbers have magical features. The number 9 is a shining example. If you multiply any number by 9 and then sum up all the individual digits to get a single digit, the sum of all these individual digits will always be 9. There are many other mysterious facts about numbers and sequences of numbers. For instance, 12+3-4+5+67+8+9=100 and there are at least one more expression consisting of nine digits in the right order with math operations between them which results in 100. The result of addition of all numbers from 1 to 100 (1+2+3+4+5++100) is also quite surprising, the total is 5,050. One more form of math magic is the math tricks which allow us to simplify the mathematical operations. For example, there is a fast way to check divisibility of any number by 3. A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3. Similar smart techniques exist for almost each type of math operations. Mathematical algorithms and thorough calculations are needed to succeed in such venturous activity as the games of chance. However, there is also a great impact on pure chance. So the gamblers are very anxious about various omens and signs. No wonder the gambling attributes are full of mysterious math-related coincidences. Probably that is why the opposite faces of a standard six-sided dice always add up to 7. Due to its abundant sacral background, the number 7 is often considered the lucky winning number. On the contrary, roulette carries a gloomy numerological symbolism. The sum of all the numbers on the roulette wheel is equal to the âNumber of the Beastâ â" 666. The mystic meaning of this fact is supported with legends about people who bargained with the devil to catch the secrets of roulette. Science conferred a magic power on the human and enabled us to build the modern world full of high-tech miracles. Mathematics is the queen of sciences and the key to understanding many scientific concepts. There are many small tips and tricks which like the magic spells help to cut the corners on the way to conquering this complicated branch of knowledge. May this force be with you, young student!

Chemistry Taught by an Ava Hadaway Chemistry Tutor
Chemistry Taught by an Ava Hadaway Chemistry TutorIs there any chemistry tutor who is more qualified than Ava Hadaway? I mean, she was the one who solved the problem in the field of chemistry that was described as a gas. Her discoveries paved the way for more advancements in science and the world of chemistry. In order to gain fame as an element, Irn combines two small things that are considered to be two parts of a larger whole. We cannot think of a thing that can be considered as a single atom if it has been divided into several smaller atoms. In this case, Irn (Volatile Nitrogen) reacts with Nitric Acid to form Nitric Acid, which in turn reacts with another compound to make Glutamic Acid, which is a di-isomeric solid, and then when separated, will revert back to the uncharged form. In short, if you can't think of a thing, you can't think of a molecule. The name iron is derived from Latin, 'nitpicks'nitro' and is the name given to a group of monatomic compounds containing N-methyl-su lfate, H-bromide, or other salts with an elevated level of chlorine ions (Cl). It has been determined that Irn contains more oxygen than other chemical elements. The name 'Nitrogen' is derived from 'nitrum,' a Greek word. The word is an acronym, which is an abbreviation for nitroxide ion. However, according to Oersted & Oersted, 'Of all the ingredients used in our textbooks, pure Na(NO3) is the most important, because in order to be useful to the human body it must be devoid of any impurities. Since Na(NO3) can no longer exist without the presence of another molecule, that other molecule becomes the 'impurity.'Reaction of Irn and Nitric Acid produces hydrogen, which then reacts with Hydrogen to produce water and then the great discovery of water as we know it today. The best part about this discovery is that the experiment started with the use of an elementary laboratory kit that could be bought over the counter. When you have to mix a chemical mixture with a gas, you need to be a ware of the dangers of the reaction with Nitric Acid and the danger of getting Hydrogen. In addition, it is necessary to make sure that the gases you are mixing are completely pure. While mixing the chemicals, it is also necessary to be very careful so that there are no chemical and poisonous gases in the mixture. You may mix a solid as a liquid mixture by using a 'watery' glass of low boiling temperature. For those of you who want to learn chemistry, Ava Hadaway Chemistry Tutor may be the perfect choice for you. In this respect, Ava hadaway is the chemist that started the field of chemistry that is known as Chemistry, the science of the composition, properties, and reactions of substances and their compounds. She played a major role in advancing the science and helping science to develop.
How to Survive Your Office Party - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / How to Survive Your Office Party - Introvert Whisperer How to Survive Your Office Party Office parties can be something of a minefield to navigate. Whilst they are a great opportunity for you to get to know your colleagues better and let off some steam, things can go wrong if you arenât careful. In fact, a study found that 51 percent of employees felt nervous about returning to work the next day, and 40 percent considered handing in their notice after the party. On the other hand, there are also a whole host of other things to consider when you are attending office parties as an introvert the prospect of nerves, initiating conversation and the pressure to have a good time can cause unnecessary stress. Introverts are not averse to social situations. They enjoy being a part of the fun as much as anyone else, and an office party is no exception. PSG Global has some tips on how you can get through the party season at work without breaking a sweat. Before the Party Have a power nap beforehand - If your party is happening after work, consider squeezing in a power nap. Studies show that naps can help to reduce blood pressure, so you could consider it as a way to calm your nerves. During the Party Turn up, but conserve your energy - Your presence is likely to be appreciated by your fellow colleagues. Even if you are only planning on coming for a couple of hours, the fact that you made an appearance can make you feel more involved and can give you something to talk about when you return to work the next day. Just listen - Socialising for too long can drain your social battery, so whilst being at a bustling gathering can be exhausting, you can still engage in conversations simply by being an active listener. Stay hydrated â" Want to avoid feeling like youâve been hit by a bus the next morning? Top-up your water levels throughout the night. Sure, youâll be making trips to the bathroom a fair bit, but youâll be doing yourself a favour by avoiding that killer headache the next morning, since alcohol is a diuretic and makes you dehydrated. Line your stomach â" Pace yourself with enough food so that the glass of red doesnât go straight to your head. Your office party is absolutely the right time to dive into canapes and indulge yourself in all the food and this is particularly important if you are planning on drinking. After the Party Honour the âintrovert hangoverâ â" As an introvert, you may find that you need more downtime than usual after your office party. If the event is lucky enough to fall on a Friday, it is perfectly fine to schedule a duvet weekend where you can recharge with some television, reading, or anything else that will help you to recalibrate. General Tips Keep the gossip to a minimum â" Everyone lets their guard down at office parties, and whilst this should be encouraged, be careful with what you say. Engaging in gossip, however well-meaning it may be, might come back to hurt you in the future. Things like over-sharing about your personal life or saying something about a colleague could wind up as an awkward conversation back in the office/with your boss/HR. There are plenty of other ways to have a good time, for example, your shower-esque singing is unlikely to wind up as a job-threatening prospect. Leave your card at home â" Chances are, after the party your colleagues might want to continue the festivities elsewhere, so bring enough cash that will get you through the night. Donât let the party season be the reason you wake up to an unpleasant surprise when you check your bank statement â" your post-party self will thank you for it. Stay professional - Whether itâs your attire for the party or how many drinks you have, donât overdo it. You may be off work, but remember that your behaviour is still going to be watched. Stay within your limits and when in doubt, follow the mood of the room you donât want to be the first person to sink! Final Thoughts The office party is a time to have fun and celebrate your successes with your colleagues. A big part of it is also recognising that as an introvert, you bring your own unique emotional intelligence and qualities to any social situation you are in. Own it, be yourself and let the office party be a chance for you to truly enjoy yourself. Author Bio: Maham Azam is a writer at PSG Global.
